Conservative political pundit, and at one time avid Donald Trump supporter, Ann Coulter said she now so disapproves of the president’s handling of the situation at the U.S.-Mexico border that she believes Hillary Clinton or former President Barack Obama would do a better job than the president.
Coulter bashed Trump in an episode of Firing Line With Margaret Hoover set to air Friday night on PBS. Hoover asked Coulter to explain how she would characterize the crisis at the southern border.
“How about this—worse than it would ever be under any Democrat. Worse than it would be under Hillary,” Coulter said.
Hoover, also a conservative, appeared somewhat surprised by that answer and reiterated her question.
“The dynamics at the border are worse than they would be under a Democrat right now?” Hoover she asked, as if seeking clarification.
“Yes, more illegal aliens pouring in than they would be under President Hillary Clinton, definitely under President Bill Clinton. We know, if you can go back to that time,” Coulter replied. “Definitely under Obama. There were surges under Obama but Obama knew, ‘Uh oh, I better do something about this.’”
Coulter continued: “Not Trump. He just sends out a tweet saying, ‘I’m going to shut down the border’ and then goes, ‘but you just keep pouring in, pouring in, pouring in.’”
Hoover then asked Coulter to comment on what Trump was not doing that a Democratic leader would do.
“I promise you this could not continue because a Democrat would know he would be dead in the water,” Coulter said in a mocking tone. “He couldn’t just tweet something out and have everybody say ‘Yay.’”
Coulter was a longtime Trump supporter—and even published a book during the 2016 campaign titled In Trump We Trust—until early 2019 when the president ended a 35-day partial government shutdown without having gotten Congress to appropriate billions in funding for his proposed border wall. Coulter said Trump had failed to deliver on his biggest campaign promise, and she subsequently lashed out publicly at the president, calling him the “biggest wimp to ever serve as president of the United States,” and later called for Trump to face a 2020 Republican primary challenger if he couldn’t build the wall. Coulter mocked Trump again in early April, when he backed off on his threat to close most or all of the southern border if Mexico did not immediately take steps to halt illegal immigration and the flow of drugs to the U.S.
“HEY! Who bet me that @realDonaldTrump was actually going to ‘close the border’?” Coulter tweeted.
On Firing Line, Coulter said she would vote for 2020 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders if the Vermont senator, who is indepedent but runs on the Democratic ticket, were to change his position and come out in favor of “protecting the border.”
“If he went back to his original position, which is the pro-blue-collar position, I mean it totally makes sense with him if he went back to that position, I’d vote for him, I might work for him,” Coulter said. “I don’t care about the rest of the socialist stuff just, can we do something for ordinary Americans.”
Coulter also said Trump had a “great campaign” in 2016 and said, “ If only, oh my gosh, if only he governed 1 percent of the way he campaigned.”
