A Hawaii-based lance corporal is being ousted from the Marine Corps after he was found to have made a series of racist and pro-Nazi tweets.

Lance Cpl. Mason Mead, 20, an infantry assault-man with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines, is in the process of being discharged under other-than-honorable conditions following an investigation into his inflammatory social media posts.

As reported by Task & Purpose, Mead was found to have praised the Nazis’ actions during the Second World War, posted a picture of explosives in the shape of swastika (which he described as “epic”) and uploaded an image of himself in blackface with the caption “hello, fellow black men.”

On May 7, Mead admitted an Article 92 charge, which constitutes a failure to obey an order or regulation, as reported by Stars and Stripes.

Capt. Eric Abrams, a Marine Corps spokesman, said the charge relates to Mead violating the Marine Corps Prohibited Activities and Conduct Prevention and Response Policy, which prohibits activities inconsistent with the force’s ethos.

The Marine Corps said Mead will be discharged pending completion of administrative and medical requirements.

An investigation into Mead’s online activity was launched in February.

Among some of the tweets Mead sent include an image of Spanish dictator General Francisco Franco and a Catholic official in a robe giving a Nazi salute along with the captain “I look at this image before sleep and smile.”

Mead also shared quotes from Leon Degrelle, a Belgian politician who collaborated with the Nazis and continued to be a prominent far-right figure after he fled to Spain in the post-war era.

“The Marine Corps is aware of the derogatory online comments attributed to a Marine with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment,” 1st Lt. David Mancilla, a Corps spokesman for 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force, told Task and Purpose at the time.

“The Marine Corps takes every instance of misconduct seriously, whether on duty, off duty, or online. Any form of racism or discrimination undermines the core values of the Marine Corps and is not tolerated.”

Mead, originally from Alabama, posted the tweets on using his Twitter profile @Jacobite_Edward. His account is now protected. He joined the Marine Corps in 2017 and his only deployment was spending six months in Okinawa, Japan, according to Millitary.com.

Last year, Lance Cpl. Vasillios Pistolis was also thrown out the Marine Corps and sentenced to 28 days confinement and reduction in rank after he was found to have attended the white supremacist “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. He also had links to neo-Nazi groups.
